Peter Gronquist @The Shooting Gallery
Friday, 02 May 2014 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows (PHOTOS).

Gronquist's taxidermied and gilded sculptures, along with some really subtle paintings, filled the space in a uniquely balanced way. If I hadn't met the guy that night, I might not believe that one person made all of this work. I fought through my debilitating fear of butterflies to see that they were meticulously pinned to the sculptures in just the right way. It seems like if there was one more butterfly, it could throw the whole thing off - but it works. It's like a consumer frenzy, complete with luxurious materials, animals, and bugs and then a quiet meditation in Rothko-like stillness.

Slade's hand-altered photographs seem to also encapsulate this balance through more bikini-clad women also with subtle painting aspects. I want to hate these photos but I can't - the way they are painted and drawn on both removes the cheesy allure of the girls and highlights the quality of the photograph. And for goodness sake, it's Riff Raff! This is exactly how photographs of him should look, complete with logos because he "only fucks with hoes who rock Dolce & Gabbana." He's ridiculous and these photos emphasize that, highlighting him as the Neon Icon.

So yes, there are lots of guns and boobs to be had, but it's a lot more than that, go see for yourself.

AJ Fosik in Tokyo at The Hellion Gallery
Monday, 21 April 2014 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

Matt Wagner recently emailed over some photos from The Hellion Gallery in Tokyo, who recently put together a show with AJ Fosik (Portland) called Beast From a Foreign Land. The gallery gave twelve of Fosik's sculptures to twelve Japanese artists (including Hiro Kurata who is currently showing in our group show Salt the Skies) to paint, burn, or build upon (PHOTOS).

The show runs from April 18th to May 11th and I wish I was able to see it. Not only do I absolutely love Fosik's work, but this kind of international collaboration is unique and powerful. By combining some of the best work from literally across the globe, Wagner has inevitably connected artists working in very different places and brought all of their work to one space. I'm really glad he shared these photos with us, and if you have the chance to see it in person, I would suggest doing so.

Statue Of A Homeless Jesus Startles A Wealthy Community
Monday, 14 April 2014 /// Written by Trippe

Sculpture of Jesus as homeless and sleeping on a park bench is "freaking out" the neighbors of this wealthy NC suburb. The sculptor, who has an affinity for street art, created it to remind us that "We believe that that's the kind of life Jesus had," Buck says. "He was, in essence, a homeless person." ~READ ON

Stupids in Lisbon, Portugal
Thursday, 27 February 2014 /// Written by Trippe

Inspired by the world known Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa and its sentence “We are avatars of past stupidity”, “Estúpidos – Porque todas as pessoas o são!” (“Stupids – Because all people are!”) is an art project by the artist “Panda do Transe”. It consists in a circuit of installations that is invading Lisbon streets, squares and other city public spaces. Until the end of January, Panda do Transe planned to install a total of 10 sculptures, which will show up at unpredictable places, as if they were a friendly but also ironic alien invasion.

“Stupids” project aims to stir up consciousness by promoting a satirical and artistic rebellion against cultural apathy and towards a sustainable gentrification, a city more affordable and open to artists, alternative forms of creation and expression.

Each figure story is completed by public interaction, the amusing installations challenges original selfies, suspicious hugs or just smiles from people passing by. They are exhibit for as long as the pieces are kept in place (the first one installed in a well known Lisbon belvedere disappeared before New Year ’s Eve) or until “stupidity” is proclaimed a illicit form of public space occupation.

Future Farmers at Gallery 16 (+photos)
Friday, 22 November 2013 /// Written by Trippe

SAN FRANCISCO --- The Bay Area art collective Futurefarmers are showcasing a sampling of their works and sculptures from their 20 year history in the show "Taking Stock" at Gallery 16 (running through Dec 31st) --- Pieces displayed are in their "exploded view" with works pulled apart.

Futurefarmers is an international artist collective practicing a form of cultural activism that exploits the interactive potential offered by new media and public spaces. Aligned around an "open practice of making work that is relevant to the time and space surrounding us," they create work that explores a variety of social and environmental issues.

Erratum

The fact that many Futurefarmers come from a background in commercial design and advertising might explain why they feel the need to make their art an enjoyable experience. They are conscious of the fact that "playing around" offers up a way to let down ones guard when dealing with serious issues.

Sam Jinks' Sculptural Work
Monday, 21 October 2013 /// Written by Van Edwards

Sam Jinks' sculptural work sustains the briefest and often most private moments in time. Emotional vulnerability is both the subject and result of his work and moves audiences in a way not expected from contemporary art. For Jinks, his works are not literal representations, but are based on the combination of different stages of life.

Jinks' work can be found in various public collections that include: McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park, Victoria, Australia ,Shepparton Art Gallery, Victoria, Australia, The Kiran Nader Museum of Art, Dehli , Indian and the Museo Escultura Figurativa Internacional Contemporaenea (MEFIC), Portugal, in addition to various private collections within Australia and internationally.

San Francisco based sculptor Jud Bergeron's current show Becoming at Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art runs through Oct 31st. ~Photos

Exploring the multi-faceted experience of becoming a parent, Bergeron’s works address the various stages and emotions involved in the transition, ranging from confusion to euphoria. Works such as “Quack-Quack” – a child’s antique pedal car featuring an atom bomb explosion-shaped eruption of rubber duckies – embody the surreal and sometimes overwhelming experience of new parenthood in sculptural form. As a whole, the combination of works on view is intended to be an immersive experience for viewers, effecting a sense of disorientation and wonder.

A 10' Tall Fish Bunny on Haight?
Thursday, 10 October 2013 /// Written by Trippe

San Franciscans know of Jeremy Fish's giant pink bunny sculpture that lived at the base of Haight St for the last couple years, and you probably know that it had to be removed as construction begins on the corner.

What you may not know is that the neighborhood and Jeremy Fish are trying to get a giant 10 foot tall permanent bronze sculpture put in it's place... $25,000 of the $50,000 has been raised thus far, and they're asking for your help to reach their goal through their Kickstarter here.

Jeremy Fish explains the bunny Kickstarter campaign.

The Bunny Statue Funeral, Friday, the 13th
Tuesday, 10 September 2013 /// Written by Trippe

SAN FRANCISCO --- As you may or may not have known, Jeremy Fish's bunny was stolen last week from it's perch on the corner of Haight @Laguna, but don't fret as it was recovered from the thieves in less than 24 hours by the SPBs.

The corner where the bunny rested along with numorous mural works is about to be demolished by Wood Properties, the developers of the Haight and Laguna property as they prepare for construction on the block. But in collaboration with the Haight Street Merchant and Neighbor Association, there are plans (and money has been raised) to contruct a 10 foot high bronze bunny!

Friday the 13th at 6pm, there at the corner of Haight and Laguna, there will be a funeral or sorts for the old bunny along with some people giving speaches about the 55 Laguna developments, Waller park, and the new Haight Street art center, all being built on this location. After that Jeremy Fish will read an eulogy, and thank everybody for helping to make a bronze statue in the Haight. ~complete details

He was a Bunny who loved the outdoors, and bowling, and as a surfer explored the beaches of southern California from Lahoya to Leo Carrillo. And up to Pismo. He died -- he died as so many young Bunnies of his generation, before his time.

Brendan Monroe Sculptures, A How To
Wednesday, 12 June 2013 /// Written by Trippe

Brendan Monroe, whose show Melting Into the Floor runs through June 15th at LA's Richard Heller, creates these great wooden sculptures and featured a bunch in the show... He's often asked how he goes about making them and gives us at Fecal Face a little 'how to' on the process.

There's a question that I get asked a lot, "How do you make those?" It often comes soon after something like, "Do you make those yourself?" I find myself trying to explain, but I'm sure I never communicate clearly what it is that I did to make the thing. So I'd like to show the way it's done with the help of a few photos. I'm not formally trained in making this kind of thing. I figured it out as I went along and learned a lot along the way. If you've got any questions or want to know more details, post them in the comments below. -Brendan Monroe

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...

I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.

It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it? --continue reading

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 10:37

nyc_graffitiNYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?

The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.

Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding
